The SS Volunteer Legion Niderlande The origin of the unit lies in the formation of the SS volunteer standard Northwest in April 1941. The SS leadership had decided to resort to volunteers of „Nordic blood“ for the upcoming campaign against the Soviet Union and to incorporate them into the ranks of the Waffen-SS. On 27 June 1941, a few days after the attack on the Soviet Union, Reichskommissar Seyss-Inquart opened the campaign for the recruitment of volunteers. This was led by General Seyffardt, a former chief of staff of the Dutch army. The SS volunteer standard Northwest, in which Flemings also served, was reclassified on 12.7.1941 in the SS volunteer association Netherlands. It was considered better for recruiting volunteers with a purely Dutch association . To begin it had regimental strength, but was reduced to battalion strength on 26.7.1941. On 24.9.1941 it was renamed the SS Volunteer Legion Nederlande and reclassified to a motorised regiment.
