Sardinien Cap Badge of the 90. Panzergrenadier Division

Stamped tin plate with pin for attachment to the cap. In a very good, slightly worn condition.

The Sardinian shield was a tradition badge that was awarded 1944 to all members of the 90th Panzergrenadier division.
After the capitulation of the 90th light Africa division in Tunisia in May 1943, the remaining remnants of the division were reorganized under the new name 90th Panzergrenadier Division. In September 1944, when Allied troops landed in southern Italy, the division was moved to mainland Italy. Until the end of the war the division fought at Monte Cassino, Rome, Florence, Rimini and Bologna, . To commemorate the founding place of Sardinia, the division created the Sardinian shield and awarded it to all members of the division.
