The Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler established the Olympia Medal of Honor on February 4, 1936, initially in 2 classes, later these were expanded to include a commemorative medal (July 31, 1936). These awards were intended to recognize achievements and services in relation to the 1936 Summer and Winter Olympics held in Germany. They were awarded to both German and foreign nationals. The 1st class was awarded for very special merits to leading figures in the management of the Olympic Organizing Committee. A total of 767 1st class decorations, 3,364 2nd class decorations and 54,915 medals were awarded. First-class certificates were always personally signed by Adolf Hitler. When awarded to foreigners, the official designation „Der Deutsche Reichskanzler“ was used, when awarded to Germans the designation „Der Führer und Reichskanzler“ was used. The cross was made according to a design by Prof. Waldemar Raemisch. He was a professor at the Staatliche Kunstschule Berlin from 1919 – 1939. The awards continued for some time after the Olympic Games and finally ended on June 19, 1937.
