The service awards for the Wehrmacht were instituted by the Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler on March 16, 1936, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the reintroduction of compulsory military service. It initially consisted of 4 classes. The 1st and 2nd classes were crosses, the 3rd and 4th classes were medals. On March 10, 1939, the oak leaves were also instituted to the 1st class for 40 years of service.
Service counted in the previous German military and in the recognised volunteer associations (Freikorps), that is until they were amalgamated into the Reichswehr and then into the Wehrmacht. Interruptions were not taken into account. Periods of service with the state police and police could also be taken into account if the person was transferred to the Wehrmacht. All members of the Wehrmacht who were in service with the Wehrmacht on March 16, 1935 or later were eligible to receive it. From May 3, 1939, the service awards could also be awarded to former members of the Austrian Wehrmacht. Similar regulations applied to this before 1935. The army and navy awards bear the national emblem of the Wehrmacht on the ribbon in the corresponding colour of the class. The Luftwaffe bears the national emblem of the Luftwaffe in the corresponding colour of the class on the ribbon.
Obverse: In the middle is the Wehrmacht eagle with the swastika placed on its tips in its fangs. On the edge the Gothic inscription: „Loyal service in the Wehrmacht“
Reverse: A dense wreath of oak leaves tied at the top and bottom at a small distance from the edge. In the enclosed field is the number with the Years served.
