The Medal in Commemoration of the Crusade against Communism (Romanian: Medalia comemorativa Cruciada Impotriva Comunismului) is a commemorative medal that was introduced on April 1, 1942 by King Mihai I of Romania with decree number 1014.
According to the award criteria, the medal could be awarded to all participants who took part in the fight against the Soviet Union in World War II. So also in larger numbers to the members of allied forces from Germany (Wehrmacht and Waffen SS), Hungary and Solwakei. The medal was usually presented in a simple paper bag, but also in small red or brown cases. On the top in gold letters: MONETARIA NATIONALA. The bronze round medal shows on its obverse the right profile of a woman with long plaited hair. A signature P. Grant can be seen below. Also the inscription ROMANIA RECUNOSCATOARE (Romania gratitude). On the reverse is a hand holding a sword stretched towards the sky. The sword separates the year 1941 in the upper arm of a cross. Around the side in capital letters + CRUCIADA IMPOTRIVA + COMUNISMULUI (crusade against communism).
The diameter of the medal is approx. 32 mm and its edge thickness is approx. 2 mm. Various battle clasps were possibe in addition to the medal. The battle clasps were either made of bronze or, more rarely, silver-plated. The clasps themselves were attached to the medal ribbon with two prongs (bent over). Their width varied from 25 mm or 35 mm, depending on the width of the awarded ribbon. So far the following battle clasps are known:
– AZOV
– BASARABIA
– BUCOVINA
– BUG
– CRIMEA / CRIMEIA
– DOBROGEA
– DONET
– NIPRU
– NISTRU
– ODESSA
– MAREA NEAGRA (ab 16. Juli 1942)
– CAUCAZ (unofficial )
– CALMUCIA (unofficial)
– STALINGRAD (unofficial)
The award of the battle clasp was awarded if the person was at one of the battlefields mentioned or was directly involved in combat operations. If the person owned several clasps, only the clasp from the last battle could be worn, but then in a silver-plated version. The bar placed on the left and right of the clasp has a letter insignia M at each of its four edge points. This letter stands for Mihai I of Romania, the founder of the medal.
The award was worn on a dark red ribbon with silver side stripes and a ribbed center stripe in the colors blue, yellow and red, the national colours of Romania. The day after it was awarded it was only worn as a field clasp.
From August 23, 1944, the day Romania declared war on the German Reich, it was a punishable offense for German soldiers to wear Romanian decorations.
According to the Law on Titles, Orders and Decorations of July 26, 1957 (§6 Paragraph 1 Number 4), awards from former, with Germany, allied countries in the Second World War may continue to be worn.
