The repetition clasp was instituted together with the renewal of the Iron Cross on September 1, 1939 by the Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler. Holders of the Iron Cross 1st Class from 1914, in the Second World War from September 1st, 1939, who again performed an act or deeds that could have been awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class did not receive a second Iron Cross 1st . Class, but a repetition clasp 1st class 1939. The repetition clasp 1st class was worn over the Iron Cross in 1914. But there are also variants in which the clasp and iron cross are firmly connected to each other. The clasp then sits on the iron cross (so-called “combi clasp”). During production, a distinction is made between 2 forms. The first form of the clasps shows a trapezoidal date plate with the ends slightly rounded inwards. The date plate of the 2nd form has straight ends. The clasp made of silver-plated non-ferrous metal (early) or zinc (late).

The 1st class braces vary in size depending on the manufacturer between 44 mm and 46 mm wide.

Front: Below an inverted trapezoid with a raised polished edge. The raised polished year „1939“ on a finely grained background. Above this is an oak leaf wreath tied at the bottom. In the enclosed, fine-grained field, the swastika standing on top. The wreath is held by an eagle looking to the right, its wings straight out.
Back: smooth, with pin or screw plate for fastening, if necessary a manufacturer code.
