The Demjansk Shield was instituted by the Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler on April 25, 1943. It was a special honor for the defenders of the Djemansk Pocket (Russia). The battle lasted from February 8, 1942 to April 21, 1942. It was awarded to all members of the Wehrmacht and its subordinate troops who were involved in the defense. Eligible recipients were soldiers who had been in continuous service for at least 60 days, members of the Air Force with more than 50 flights and soldiers who suffered injuries or frostbite that were recognized with the wounded badge. The deadline for applications was December 31, 1943.

The certificates of ownership issued bore the signature of General of Infantry Graf Brockdorff-Ahlefeldt, the defender of Djemansk. Since he died on May 9, 1943, the signature was facsimiled. The following units were included in the pocket: 12th, 32nd, 123rd Infantry Divisions of the 2nd Army Corps, the subordinate Infantry Divisions 30 and 290 and the 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf.

Based on this, the number of awards is assumed to be around 95,000, including posthumous awards. The shield was worn on the left upper arm of the uniform.

An elongated curved shield made of stamped iron or zinc with silver plate. The shield is lined with uniform material in the color of the respective branch of arms (army = field gray, air force = blue gray, etc.). The reverse plate usually made of sheet iron. The reverse plate has a paper covers in different colours (brownish, black, green).
Front: The shield with raised polished edging. The background of the inside is smooth. In the enclosed field 2 crossed long swords.
Behind the blades in the upper triangle is a stylised single-engine plane with fixed wheels. The wings are over the swords. Under the grips of the swords is the year „1942“.
Sitting on the shield is an elongated, square shield with a raised edge. In the enclosed field in capital letters „DEMJANSK“. On the left and right edges there is a depiction of two wooden bunkers with slits, typical of the battles around the Demyansk pocket. In the space between there is an oak leaf wreath tied at the bottom. Inside is the swastika. The national eagle sits on the wreath. Type with lowered wings that extend to the side of the bunkers. The eagle looks to the right.
