The Air Raid Medal was established on January 30, 1938 on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the National Socialist seizure of power by the Führer and Reich Chancellor Addolf Hitler. The award was presented in two classes.
The 2nd level was awarded to people who had rendered outstanding services to air raid protection in the German Reich after January 30, 1938.
The first level was awarded to people who had distinguished themselves through special services in promoting German air defense.

Acquiring the 1st class did not require obtaining the 2nd class. The designs for both classes were from Egon Jantke from Berlin.

Round medal made of aluminum (light) or zinc (heavy). At the top there is a simple eyelet with a band ring soldered on.
Obverse: The edge is formed by a wreath of oak leaves tied at the bottom. In the wreath there is a circular line, followed by the inscription „FOR MERITS IN AIR PROTECTION“, with a swastika standing on top.
Reverse: The edge is formed by a wreath of oak leaves tied at the bottom. In the wreath there is a circular line with the year of the foundation „1938“ Ribbon: 30 mm wide, purple, with white, red, white, black edge stripes on both sides
