This medal was instituted on December 23, 1815 by Duke Friedrich August von Nassau-Usingen. This award was given as a campaign medal for the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the Nassau contingent who took part in the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon. The medal was awarded in gold and silver. The gold medal was only awarded 10 times. The silver medal has been awarded around 7,500 times. The die cutter was Johann Lindenschmit.
The duchy took part in the battle with 2 regiments, the 2nd regiment being made up of Nassau and Orange. Later (1817) a smaller medal was instituted for off-duty wear. This measures only 18 mm.
A round silver or gold medal with a raised edge. At the top a wide, strong, soldered eyelet for the ribbon
Front: In the center the duke of Nassau looking to the right. The inscription „FRIEDRICH AUGUST HERZOG ZU NASSAU“ on the edge. Below the neck the initials of the medalist „J.(I.) L.“. Johann Lindenschmit.
Reverse: The inscription „DEN NASSAUISCHEN STREITERN BEY WATERLOO“ on the edge. Below it is the two-line writing „DEN 18 Juni 1815“. The goddess of victory and a warrior stand on the base. The winged goddess of victory on the left holds a palm branch in her right hand. The outstretched right arm holds a laurel wreath over the warrior.
