Grand Admiral Dönitz reserved the right to award the silver submarine front clasp. Eventually It was however awarded by the person responsible for the location. The requirement for the award was, in addition to impeccable leadership, successful participation on voyages in enemy areas or special merits in combat, such as the sinking of an opposing warship, or a high number of sunk tonnage (BRT).
